Some wines are born out of patience and exceptional circumstances. This Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives 2018 from Alsace is a wonderful example of this. The grapes remain on the vine for an extra long time, allowing them to concentrate and develop an intense aromatic richness. The result is a wine with a beautiful golden yellow colour and a deep, expressive style that immediately makes an impression.
The hand-picked grapes – 100% Gewurztraminer – were harvested on 18 November 2018, when the grapes had reached optimal ripeness. In some cases, noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) also plays a role, adding extra complexity and concentration. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pneumatically pressed and fermented under controlled temperatures to preserve the aromatic finesse of the grape variety. The wine is then aged on the fine lees for about eight months, which adds extra structure and roundness.
In the glass, this Vendanges Tardives displays a powerful aromatic expression with exotic fruit, ripe fruit and a slightly honeyed richness. The palate is full and round, with impressive length and a beautiful balance between sweetness and freshness. It is a wine that pairs perfectly with foie gras, rich dishes or as a meditative wine at the end of a dinner.
