Il Pugnalone is a powerful yet approachable red blend from certified organic vineyards on the south-facing slopes of Umbria, at an altitude of 490 to 530 metres. The soil consists of sedimentary clay, gravelly sand and alluvial silt containing marine fossils from the Middle Pliocene, which lend the wine its minerality and complexity. Following a hand-harvest and temperature-controlled fermentation, the Sangiovese is aged for one year in second- or third-use oak barrels, after which it is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The blend is then aged for a further year in the bottle before release, which lends the wine additional integration and elegance.
In the glass, Il Pugnalone displays a deep ruby-red colour. The nose opens with lovely floral notes of violet alongside dark fruit such as blackberry and cherry. On the palate, the wine is approachable and round, with a hint of white pepper and firm but well-integrated tannins that lead to a soft, round finish. The combination of Italian Sangiovese with the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and the juiciness of Merlot results in a versatile and satisfying wine.
Il Pugnalone is an excellent table wine that pairs harmoniously with pasta in tomato sauce, grilled red meat, steaks, game, roast lamb and mature cheeses. It also pairs superbly with dishes featuring mushrooms or pan-fried meats.
