This Sangiovese IGT Umbria is an elegant and authentic expression of Italy’s most widely planted red grape variety, rooted in the unique terroir of Umbria. The certified organic vineyards are situated on south-facing slopes at an altitude of 490 to 530 metres, on soil consisting of sedimentary clay, gravelly sand and alluvial silt containing marine fossils from the Middle Pliocene. Following a hand-harvest and temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine is aged for one year in second- or third-use oak barrels, followed by a further year of bottle ageing. This gives the wine the necessary depth and structure, without overpowering the character of the grape.
In the glass, the Sangiovese displays a beautiful garnet colour. The nose is rich and expressive, with aromas of plum, violet and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is dry, earthy and well-structured, with firm tannins and a persistent finish that reflects the typical Umbrian character of this grape. The two years’ ageing give the wine lovely integration and approachability.
With its full-bodied structure and earthy character, the Sangiovese pairs excellently with pasta served with rich meat sauces, grilled red meat, roast lamb, game and mature cheeses such as pecorino stagionato. It also pairs particularly well with dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles.
