‘Saggezza’ means ‘wisdom’ in Italian, and the name is fitting. For this is the wine that Cantine Pietraforata uses to demonstrate what Nebbiolo can be like in a younger, more direct form: no decades of ageing, but twelve months in barriques followed by half a year in stainless steel. A wine that speaks, but does not shout.
The Nebbiolo grapes are harvested by hand in the first half of October from the alluvial, clayey soils of Ghemme – the very same soils nourished by the volcanic heritage of Valsesia. Following gentle pressing and malolactic fermentation, the Saggezza matures for a year in barriques, with the small barrels imparting structure and subtle oak notes without overpowering its fruity character. The subsequent six months in stainless steel ensure integration and freshness.
Saggezza has a deep ruby red colour with garnet highlights. The nose is intense and complex: small red fruits and a spicy, slightly warm character that reflects the terroir of Northern Piedmont. On the palate, it is dry, warm, smooth and savoury, with pleasantly balanced tannins and a lingering finish. Open the bottle half an hour before serving and pair it with semi-mature cheeses, cured meats and the classic meat dishes of Piedmontese cuisine. Ideal for the next eight to ten years.
