The strength of Spain’s wine regions

Spain has dozens of wine regions, but a few areas largely define the character of Spanish wine culture. Rioja is internationally perhaps the best-known region and is famous for its elegant red wines based on Tempranillo. These wines are often aged in oak, giving notes of vanilla, spice, and ripe red fruit.

Ribera del Duero, located on the Castilian plateau, produces powerful and concentrated red wines with great depth and aging potential. Here, Tempranillo shows a darker and more intense profile than in Rioja, with firm tannins and aromas of black fruit.

In the northeast lies Catalonia, where in addition to excellent still wines, the famous sparkling wine Cava is produced. It is made using the traditional method and is known for its fresh style and fine bubbles.

Further south we find regions such as La Mancha and Jumilla, where the warm climate creates full, ripe wines with plenty of fruit and power. In the cooler northwest, with areas like Rías Baixas and Bierzo, fresh and aromatic wines are made under strong influence of the Atlantic Ocean.

White grapes: fresh, aromatic, and surprisingly versatile

Although Spain is often associated with red wine, white wine is becoming increasingly important. Albariño from Galicia is one of the best-known white grapes and produces fresh, aromatic wines with notes of citrus, peach, and a subtle saline touch. Perfect with fish and seafood.

Verdejo, especially from Rueda, is known for its lively acidity and herbal aromas. These wines are fresh, expressive, and very popular as a modern, easy-drinking white wine style.

Grapes such as Viura, Godello, and Macabeo are also widely used and show how versatile Spanish white wine can be — from light and refreshing to rich and gastronomic.

Red grapes: power, depth, and tradition

Tempranillo is without doubt the most important red grape in Spain. It forms the backbone of many of the country’s most famous wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero and can be both elegant and powerful depending on region and aging.

Garnacha also plays a major role, especially in warmer regions. This grape produces wines with ripe red fruit, soft tannins, and a full structure. Old vines often give surprisingly complex and concentrated wines.

Monastrell, mainly found in southeastern Spain, is known for its deep color and bold flavor. Wines from this grape are often full, spicy, and intense, but can also show great finesse when coming from old vines.

    More than just still wines

Spain shows that it can do much more than red and white wine. The sparkling wines from Catalonia, known as Cava, are made using the same method as Champagne and offer excellent value for money.

Fortified wines also play an important role in Spanish wine culture. In Jerez, in the south of the country, the famous Sherry wines are made, ranging from dry and salty to rich and sweet. This unique style has a loyal following around the world.

    Why choose Spanish wine?

The success of Spanish wine lies in the combination of enormous diversity and strong tradition. Thanks to the large number of native grape varieties, diverse climates, and an increasing focus on quality, Spain offers wines for every taste and every moment.

For wine lovers who want to look beyond the classic wine countries, Spain is a land full of discoveries: from fresh Albariño to powerful Ribera del Duero, from elegant Rioja to lively Cava. One thing is certain  once you discover Spanish wine, you keep coming back.
