Every third Thursday of November, the same ritual takes place across France and far beyond: the uncorking of the Beaujolais Nouveau. Wine bars, brasseries, and living rooms open their bottles simultaneously, because that is the tradition: the new vintage is released on that one day, never before. It is a celebration of the season, of the harvest workers, of the winemaker, and of the simple pleasure of a young, fresh glass of wine. The Beaujolais Nouveau from Château de Durette is exactly that: a wine that cannot wait and doesn’t need to.
Château de Durette tends 1.5 hectares of fifty-year-old Gamay vines on sandy granite soils at the heart of the Beaujolais Villages appellation. Those old vines and a low yield of just 40 hectolitres per hectare give the grapes a concentration you don’t always expect from a Nouveau. Production is certified sustainable at the highest level (HVE 3), and the winemaking combines tradition with precision: 60% destemmed fruit, tank fermentation, and a bottling that literally captures the freshness of the harvest in the bottle.
In the glass, the Nouveau shows a clear cherry-red colour with ruby tints. The nose is generous and immediate: redcurrant, blackcurrant, raspberry, and a touch of flowers. On the palate it is fresh, fruity, and cheerful, with soft tannins and a light finish that makes it the perfect companion to charcuterie and grilled meats. Serve lightly chilled at 12 to 14 degrees and share it with friends, because that is the only way a Beaujolais Nouveau truly tastes its best.
