Cantina Simoni's Kerner is an exceptional white wine from the Dolomites, made from a grape variety originally from Germany that is a cross between Riesling and Trollinger. On the steep slopes of Monte Corona near Giovo, at an altitude of 600 metres, this grape finds an ideal habitat. The vineyards are on calcareous and clayey soils and are planted according to the traditional Trentino pergola system. The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks. A small proportion (20%) of the wine matures for four months in third-pass oak barriques, adding extra depth without losing its fresh character.
The Kerner presents itself with a bright straw yellow colour and an aroma that combines floral notes, citrus and a hint of white peach. On the palate, it is fresh, elegant and nicely balanced, with fine acidity and a slight spicy undertone that comes from its ageing in wood. This combination of freshness and complexity makes the wine perfect for drinking young, but also interesting to age briefly in bottle.
In terms of wine-food combination, this wine is excellent with fish-based dishes such as grilled trout or sea bass with lemon butter. Light risottos, vegetarian pasta dishes and fresh salads with goat cheese or white asparagus are also a perfect match. Serve the wine around 12 °C for the best taste experience.
