Melancólica from Viticultores de Lapuebla is an expressive and rare red wine made from 100% Maturana, an indigenous grape known for its aromatic intensity and characterful structure. The wine comes from the Fuentepastores high-altitude vineyard plot in Laguardia, at around 700 metres altitude, where chalky clay soils provide tension, freshness and depth.
The grapes are harvested by hand and fully destemmed, followed by spontaneous fermentation in open vats with careful extraction. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures for 11 months in 225-litre French oak barrels. This is followed by another 5 months of bottle aging, which contributes to its harmony and refinement.
In the glass, Melancólica shows a deep cherry red colour with purple reflections. The nose is intense and complex, with aromas of wild strawberry and blackberry, complemented by floral notes and spicy touches such as liquorice and a slight menthol note. On the palate, it is round and creamy, with soft, enveloping tannins and a balsamic touch, resulting in a long, elegant and layered finish.
