The Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Bachsatz 2024 represents the highest quality category in the Wachau and is also the crown jewel of Weingut Schwaiger. The Ried Bachsatz is one of the estate’s finest plots in Wösendorf, situated on hillside and terraced slopes on a soil of paragneiss, loam and loess. The grapes are harvested late, at optimal ripeness, and ferment fully until natural fermentation ceases, after which the wine matures in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. With 14.5% alcohol, this Smaragd displays the concentration and power characteristic of the finest vintages and vineyards of the Wachau.
In the glass, the Ried Bachsatz Smaragd displays a rich, yellow-fruity colour. The nose is voluminous and expressive, with subtle apricot aromas and a delicate fruitiness. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, with an excellent harmony of ripe fruit, fresh acidity and minerality that lingers on the finish. This is a wine with ageing potential that develops ever greater complexity with each passing year.
Thanks to its full body and complex flavour profile, the Ried Bachsatz Smaragd is an ideal accompaniment to rich dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel with parsley potatoes, grilled sea fish, lobster, veal sweetbreads, poultry with creamy sauces and mature Austrian cheeses. It also performs excellently as a fine dining wine at a festive dinner.
