The Riesling Smaragd Ried Kollmütz 2024 is Weingut Schwaiger’s top cuvée and represents the highest quality category in the Wachau. Sourced from the top plots of the Ried Kollmütz in Wösendorf, on a soil of paragneiss, loam and loess, the grapes are harvested late at peak ripeness and ferment fully in stainless steel tanks until natural fermentation ceases. With an alcohol content of 14.5%, this Smaragd displays the concentration and structure characteristic of the very best Wachau Rieslings – wines that can age for decades and become increasingly complex.
In the glass, the Ried Kollmütz Smaragd displays a medium-deep greenish-yellow colour with silvery reflections. The nose is exuberant and expressive, with notes of yellow peach and a hint of pineapple, complemented by a mineral touch. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, with delicate yellow tropical fruits, a refined acidity and an elegant, long finish with an appealing hint of honey in the aftertaste. A wine of great class and ageing potential.
Thanks to its full body, ripe fruitiness and minerality, the Ried Kollmütz Smaragd is an excellent accompaniment to refined fish dishes such as pan-fried sea bass or salmon trout, lobster and other rich shellfish, sweetbreads, poultry with truffles and mature Austrian cheeses. It is also wonderful as a gourmet wine to be enjoyed on its own.
