The Grüner Veltliner “Sophie” Smaragd 2018 is a distinctive and mature expression of the Wachau’s highest quality category, sourced from the renowned Ried Kollmütz in Wösendorf. On the deep-rooted paragneiss soil of these top plots, the grapes are harvested late at optimal ripeness, after which they undergo a deliberately long fermentation in stainless steel tanks until natural fermentation ceases. Now, after more than seven years of bottle ageing, the ‘Sophie’ has reached its full complexity and demonstrates how a great Smaragd evolves in the bottle.
In the glass, the ‘Sophie’ sparkles with a radiant golden-yellow colour. The nose is refined and complex, with subtle herbal notes, yellow apple and ripe pear, underpinned by a delicate mineral note that reflects the paragneiss soil of the Ried Kollmütz. On the palate, concentrated fruit and precise acidity combine to create a long, elegant finish that is characteristic of a mature Wachau Smaragd at its peak.
With its maturity and depth, the “Sophie” is an excellent accompaniment to pan-fried fish, asparagus and light starters, as well as to poultry with refined sauces and mild to semi-mature cheeses. It is equally excellent as a wine to savour with a festive meal or simply as a delight in its own right.
