The Liaison 2023 is the latest vintage from the cuvée made from 60-year-old vines, and it shows it straight away: youthful, energetic and full of potential. Whilst the 2022 already shows some openness and roundness, the 2023 is tighter and more direct, with more bite and a character that requires time to develop.
In the glass, it is a clear cherry red with a deeper glow than the 2022. The nose is youthful and still somewhat closed: red and black berries in the foreground, restrained toasty oak notes, and a hint of chilli and pepper in the background. On the palate, the fruit is fresh and cool, with ethereal spicy and peppery notes that lend it a distinctive liveliness. There is a certain acidity with bite, youthful yet refined tannins and a good, lingering finish. A hint of salt in the background, a touch of smoke, tarragon and mustard herbs, and juniper-like nuances make it more complex than it first appears. A very good, crisp finish with bite.
Delicious with grilled lamb, wild duck, mushroom dishes or mature cheeses. But it also needs time: let it breathe after opening, or lay it down for a few more years. Serve at 14–16°C.
