    What makes Castilla-La Mancha special?

Castilla-La Mancha is Spain's largest wine region: it holds 47.5 percent of all Spanish vineyards (422,391 of 889,470 hectares in 2025). It lies on a high plateau in the centre of the country.

The climate is continental: long, hot, dry summers, cold winters and little rain, about 300 to 400 millimetres a year. In La Mancha, the largest designated area, the vineyards sit at 480 to 700 metres on chalky, reddish-brown sandy clay, with about 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. At higher altitudes the nights are cool, so the grapes ripen more slowly and stay fresher. It is also the setting of Cervantes' Don Quixote.

Which grapes and designated areas does Castilla-La Mancha have?

The region has eight designated areas: Almansa, La Mancha, Manchuela, Méntrida, Mondéjar, Ribera del Júcar, Uclés and Valdepeñas.

Airén, a white grape that copes well with heat and drought, has long dominated plantings. Alongside it grow Tempranillo (called Cencibel in La Mancha), Garnacha, Macabeo, Syrah, Chardonnay and Moscatel, among others. International grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc also do well on the plateau.

What does wine from Castilla-La Mancha taste like?

Wine from Castilla-La Mancha often tastes ripe and fruity thanks to the sun and the altitude, with fresh acidity from the cool nights. The reds have red to black fruit and soft tannins, the whites flowers, white fruit and a fresh finish, and the sparkling wines fine bubbles with brioche.

Which wines from Castilla-La Mancha can you buy at ONWINE?

Right now you can buy wine from Castilla-La Mancha at ONWINE from Bodega Amadís de Gaula in Almagro, with vineyards at 650 to 1,050 metres, higher than is usual in La Mancha. Winemaker Paco Granados makes signature wines with balance, freshness and harmony as the starting point.

    Smooth and fruity: red

The Requiebro Merlot ages for ten months in French oak and has strawberry, cherry and a silky finish. The Requiebro Tempranillo ages for twelve months in French oak and smells of cherry liqueur and liquorice. The Los Caprichos de Paco Syrah Maceración Carbónica is made by carbonic maceration and is fresh and velvety, with strawberry, cherry and roses. You can serve it lightly chilled.

    Full and powerful: red

The Requiebro Garnacha ages for twelve months in French oak and is full and velvety, with ripe red fruit. The Requiebro Gaula 0.2 Tinto is a blend of Tempranillo, Syrah and Petit Verdot, aged for fourteen months in French oak. The Requiebro SO NI DO Tempranillo ages for fourteen months in oak and then another sixteen months in bottle. The Requiebro Cabernet Sauvignon ages for sixteen months in French oak and has black fruit, balsamic and chocolate. The Requiebro Petit Verdot ages for eighteen months in oak and has blackcurrant, coffee and cedar.

    Fresh and elegant: white

The Requiebro Macabeo comes from vineyards at 850 metres and has white flowers, white fruit and a light bitterness. The Requiebro Chardonnay Joven is made without oak and has tropical fruit, stone fruit and mineral notes. The Los Caprichos de Paco Blanc de Noir is a white wine made from 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Merlot.

    White with character: oak-aged

The Requiebro Chardonnay Edición Limitada and the Requiebro Sauvignon Blanc Edición Limitada are aged in French oak and each made in a run of 1,000 numbered bottles. The Chardonnay has peach, quince and nuts, the Sauvignon Blanc tropical fruit, lemon verbena and brioche.
