'Appianum' Rosso IGP Calabria is a quirky red wine that does not frame itself anywhere: a wine "for everyone and for no one". Made from Gaglioppo, Greco Nero and Magliocco (canino and dolce), supplemented by other indigenous varieties, this wine comes from extremely poor, sandy plots of minuscule size. Everything about this wine exudes craft and originality. All vinification and ageing takes place in wood, which contributes to its depth and its powerful yet refined character. Only 1,500 to 2,500 bottles are made each year.
In the glass, it shines with a deep crimson colour with purple hues - bright and vibrant. The bouquet is unique and remarkably layered, with aromas of red and white cherries, amarena, blackcurrant, olive, black pepper and liquorice. In addition, scents of candied citrus peel, dried fig, wild flowers, cinchona bark and even salty notes like sea breeze and iodine are released, framed by Mediterranean spiciness. It is a fragrance profile that continues to develop in the glass, rich in nuance and with an almost timeless, sacred depth.
This wine breathes the south: warm, characterful and mysterious. It bears the traces of terroir, of history and tradition, revealing itself slowly but unforgettably.
