The key wine regions of Austria

In Lower Austria (Niederösterreich), along the Danube, crisp whites dominate, especially Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. These wines are known for their minerality, freshness and subtle spice.
In Burgenland, close to the Hungarian border, full-bodied reds like Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt are the stars, alongside world-famous dessert wines such as Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein.
Styria (Steiermark) has gained international recognition with aromatic Sauvignon Blanc and other vibrant whites.
Even the capital city, Vienna, has vineyards within its limits, producing the iconic Wiener Gemischter Satz, a traditional field blend.

White grape varieties: freshness and elegance

Austria’s flagship grape is Grüner Veltliner, offering styles that range from light and refreshing to complex and age-worthy. Typical aromas include citrus, green apple and the signature note of white pepper.
Riesling is also highly prized, often dry, elegant and mineral-driven. Other varieties like Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay add further diversity to Austria’s white wine portfolio.

Red grape varieties: power and sophistication

Though whites dominate production, Austria’s reds deserve attention. Blaufränkisch is the most prestigious, producing spicy, structured wines with dark fruit and excellent ageing potential.
Zweigelt, the most planted red variety, is juicy, fruity and easy to enjoy, while still capable of more serious expressions.
St. Laurent, often compared to Pinot Noir, is elegant and silky with cherry-driven aromas.

    Beyond still wines

Austria is also gaining recognition for its sparkling wines. Austrian Sekt, especially from traditional bottle fermentation, is increasingly celebrated for its finesse and quality. On the sweeter side, Austria’s dessert wines – particularly those from Burgenland – are among the finest in the world.

    Why Austrian wine?

The strength of Austrian wine lies in its commitment to quality and authenticity. Strict wine laws and a focus on native grape varieties ensure wines with a clear sense of place. For wine lovers looking to discover something beyond the classic regions, Austria offers an exciting world to explore – from crisp Grüner Veltliner to powerful Blaufränkisch and exquisite sweet wines.
